Simple Grips Part 1

Over the next couple weeks I'm going to go over proper positioning of the hand on both the ball and the bat.
We're going to start with a 4-seam fastball. It is called a 4-seam fastball because as the ball comes out of the hand, the rotation shows the 4 seams traveling to the target with backspin.

The 4-seam fastball grip is used when we want to throw the ball hard in a straight line. We start by taking the index and middle finger and placing them across the laces, making sure the finger tips are making contact with the laces themselves. Don't split the fingers apart too far, but they also should not be touching.

Next we place our thumb directly underneath the space between the index and middle finger. This gives the ball balance in our hand.

You'll notice from the side view that I'm not "choking" the ball in my hand. There is a gap between the ball and my palm, but it's not so large that I've lost control over the ball.
As I throw the ball my wrist stays stable and firm, I do not flick my wrist. Keep an eye out for a future post dispelling commonly held beliefs!
This grip should be used by infielders, outfielders, and is almost always in a pitcher's repertoire.
